Rare Editions of Books that could be Worth a Fortune
Matthew Collins
These books have been identified as some that could be worth a fortune if they are first edition copies:
Animal Farm by George Orwell – Hardcover first editions of George Orwell’s Animal Farm – which criticises ideologies of Stalinism in the USSR – can fetch as much as £10,000.
Lord of the Flies by William Golding – If you own a first edition of this classic, you could cash it in for up to £5,000-£6,000.
Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh – A first edition of Irvine Welsh’s novel can fetch anything between £500-£1,500.
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien – Only 1,500 copies of The Hobbit were printed originally, but the book sold out after three months. A first edition with an Elvish inscription from Tolkien sold at auction in London for £137,000.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald – The first edition of The Great Gatsby with the original cover is tough to find. A copy sold in New York in 2009, fetched $182,000.
It would not be right to leave out ancient classics such as the Iliad and the Odyssey. One copy of Homer’s Odyssey from 1524 is on sale for over £20,000, a very cheap price for such a copy. In excellent condition, it is an exceptionally rare collectors’ item with only two having appeared at auction over the past 80 years.
