Rolex Explorer fetches five times its estimate

A vintage Rolex Explorer watch created after the first ascent of Mount Everest has fetched more than five times its estimate at auction.

The winning bid stood at £31,900 despite the estimate price being £5,000.
The watch is made from stainless steel, has a black dial and distinctive three, six and nine Arabic numerals. The watch was commissioned by Rolex for Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay for their trip to become the first people to reach the summit of Mt Everest. The name ‘Rolex Explorer’ was given to the watch after their daring mission.
